Supporting Grade 8s For Future Success Pt 2

The Grade 8 teaching team at Cambie Secondary has continued its outstanding work in supporting students' executive functioning skills throughout the year. In the final months of school, the team has focused on preparing for the upcoming school year by developing proactive strategies aimed at helping the next cohort of Grade 8 students transition smoothly into high school. One of the key plans includes enhancing communication with families to keep them better informed and engaged. Additionally, each new Grade 8 student will be paired with a senior student from the Recreation Leadership program to provide mentorship and support. The goal is to implement early and targeted interventions that foster organization, time management, and independence—core components of executive functioning.

Looking ahead, the Grade 8 team will also introduce a school-wide literacy assessment modeled after the Grade 10 Graduation Literacy Assessment (GLA). This new initiative, developed in collaboration with literacy coaches across the district, will be administered to all Grade 8 students at Cambie. The results of this assessment will help identify students' literacy strengths and areas for growth early in the school year. These insights will be shared with teachers across departments, providing a foundation for collaborative conversations and instructional planning centered on student needs. Through these efforts, the Grade 8 team aims to build strong academic and personal foundations for students that will support their success throughout high school.
