The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is an opportunity to recognize Canada’s continuous and ongoing oppression towards indigenous communities. It is a public commemoration of the tragic and painful history between the Canadian government and the indigenous people. Reconciliation is an ongoing process that can not be reached within time limits but instead with commitment to listen and learn from Indigenous people, perspectives, and histories, to grow from our past mistakes and truly mend the broken relationship between Indigenous people the government. It is based on recognition of rights, respect, cooperation, and partnership. We can take steps toward Reconciliation in our everyday lives by acknowledging the land that we are situated upon, making donations, supporting indigenous arts and culture and accurately educating ourselves and others about Indigenous history with our knowledge. Today is much more than wearing an orange shirt.
