Innovation: Ministry of Education’s Student Reporting Policy Pilot (SRPP)

The BC curriculum has been redesigned to enable our students to meet the needs of our rapidly changing world. Along with the changes in curriculum come changes in ways we communicate with you about student learning. Research has shown that good communication between home, school, and child is key to student success. This triangle of communication is designed to provide up-to-date information about student progress and involve the student, teacher, and family in meaningful dialogue throughout the school year.

We are proud to announce that our school was once again successful in our application to receive an Innovation Grant to be part of the Ministry of Education’s Student Reporting Policy Pilot (SRPP).  This year, we join 33 schools in Richmond and 14 districts across the province in this pilot of the Ministry of Education’s draft K-9 Student Reporting Policy. A full list of participating Cambie teachers and classes that are participating can be found at the bottom of this letter.

In our district, school teams participating in the SRPP have been asked to have an inquiry question as part of this process.

At Cambie, we are seeking to understand the following:

  • How can we increase student engagement through the use of e-portfolios and formative assessment?  Will students become more engaged in their learning by taking on greater ownership of sharing their personal learning through an e-portfolio?
  • How will using an e-portfolio increase the dialogue between students, teachers and parents to share in the learning journey of their child?

As a part of this pilot project, you can expect reporting to look different from what you are used to. Communicating student learning in this way requires us to provide timely and responsive feedback and updates on student progress throughout the school year and we will be doing this in a variety of ways, including:

  • On-going digital portfolio posts and reviews
  • Two opportunities for Parent-Teacher Conferences (October and April)
  • Two Points of Progress focused on student engagement and behavior (Interim Reports in October and February)
  • Two Points of Progress focused on student progress in relation to the course learning standards (aligned with Report Cards in December and April)
  • Student reflection and self-assessment of the Core Competencies
  • A final Summary of Progress (end of year) for each course

Students in the pilot group will not receive a traditional letter grade, percentage or work habit on their report card. Instead, they will receive feedback in relation to the learning standards and big ideas of the course with a four-level proficiency scale.  This is to supplement ongoing evidence of student learning that is posted in your child’s e-portfolio throughout the term. We hope that providing you with timely, flexible information about student progress this year will keep you well informed about your child’s learning.
