Raising the Bar - Action

We have challenged all members of our school community to "Raise the Bar".

STAFF:

  • Staff have been challenged to "Raise the Bar" by setting high expectations for students and supporting them to reach their personal best.
  • Staff have strived to:
    • continue to implement aspects of the redesigned curriculum
    • to more intentionally connect learning to real life applications
    • to provide students with more flexibility and choice as to how they demonstrate their learning
    • to focus on developing the skills and attitudes that students need for life after graduation (core competencies)
    • to teach students how to be more accountable and take ownership of their own learning.
    • to change assessment practice to provide more formative assessment
    • to communicate student learning by providing more descriptive information and evidence of learning, and to describe learning through the use of proficiency scales and learning maps

STUDENTS:

  • Students have been challenged to "Raise the Bar" by:
    • arriving to class on time and demonstrating strong and consistent attendance
    • always submiting their best work that they are proud of
    • taking ownership of their own learning, asking questions, seeking extra help
    • attending lunch time tutorials and after school support in the Cambie Commons

PARENTS/GUARDIANS/COMMUNITY:

  • Parents/Guardians have been challenged to Raise the Bar" by:
    • becoming more involved and connected to our school by showing interest in their child's learning on a daily basis
    • asking questions about their child's learning
    • sitting with their child during homework
    • attending more school-based and parent education events
    • joining our Parent Advisory Council
  • We strongly believe in the Student - Family - School partnership and we all have to work together!

We have made great progress on our action plans towards our focus areas:

Student Engagement:

  • Exit Slips: All students should be able to answer these questions after each class: What did I learn today?  Why did I learn it?  How will this help me in the future?
  • Cross Curricular Learning: Students working on projects that integrate more than one curricular area
  • Communicating student learning through digital portfolios
  • More intentional integration of core competencies across all disciplines, including e-portfolio reflections.
  • Student - Teacher conferencing & goal setting
  • Increased focus on providing students with formative feedback on learning
  • Increased focus on going deeper with learning rather than focusing on covering more content
  • Creation of the Cambie Guiding Principles
  • Implementation of 60 minutes per week of Personal Learning Time

Increasing students' ownership, motivation and personal accountability for their learning:

  • Formulation of a staff accountability committee
  • Targeted Student Learning Plan follow-ups after Interim Reports & Report Cards
  • Study Skills Tutorial session open to all students
  • Collaboration time student referrals: students referred to attend supervised support sessions during staff collaboration time
